The Beauty of Advertising - NHL Edition

Posted April 14th, 2007 by Danny M Filed Under: Uncategorized

For decades upon decades, championships upon championships, and disappointments upon disappointments, sports fans relax on the comfort of their own couches, grip their trusty remotes, and juggle between channels to watch there favorite teams perform night in and night out.

For the most part, just 1 day out of the year do we rest our remotes on the coffee table and leave the game on throughout the night. This day has become notoriously known as Super Bowl Sunday, almost a holiday of its own here in the States. But what is the reason why we watch the commercials for this game and this game only?

Most of the commercials we see on Super Bowl Sunday are for car insurance and alcohol, which in my opinion need no advertising. Everyone needs auto insurance, it’s the law, and you’ll always have your alcoholics, so why spend millions of dollars on a clever commercial?

I am more likely to watch a commercial for something that is advertising for a purpose, such as the NHL. Thus, I have created a list, inspired by the NHL Quest for the Cup, of the greatest NHL advertisements over the years.

  1. This is one of my favorite Cup Crazy ads for the NHL. It premiered in the mid 90’s and features Rock and Roll superstars, KISS. Thanks to the age of the video, it is a very poor quality, but a rare, great commercial none-the-less.
  2. The NHL may be the 3rd most popular professional sport in the US but I’m sure they still have celebrity fans, I mean Elisha Cuthbert is dating Sean Avery and I wouldnt mind watching a commercial featuring her as a spokesperson. But instead, the NHL contracted one of the most obscure movie stars to advertise there prized possesion, the Stanley Cup, at the start of the 2004 playoffs.
  3. As much as I hate the New York Rangers, there is no denying that they have one of the best marketing/advertisement team. This commercial is not a part of the Bobby Granger series, he will make his Basement debut later in the list. Instead this commercial was from back when Gretzky and Messier were reunited in the Big Apple.
  4. Another video from the Coolest Game on Earth campaign, this time featuring a Pittsburgh Penguins superstar forward, not Staal, not Malkin, and not Crosby. Those 3 were probably still playing PeeWee hockey when this first aired.
  5. Now most of the commercials that I have taken a liking too have been overly comedic, this one takes a different approach. It is more cinematic then the rest and it has a strong voice over, see if you can guess who it is. Heres a hint, he is germophobic and has his own cartoon.
  6. For some reason, no matter who’s defending, or who’s in net, to me the scariest guy in the league is Mats Sundin. Everytime he touches the puck I feel a sense of urgency and fright that he is going to burry the puck. You never know if “He’s going top shelf, bottom shelf, glove side, stick side”.
  7. Well I promised a Bobby Granger, and so here it is. The best of the collection.
  8. Starring one of the most underrated players in NHL history, and a heart broken ex-girlfriend, Adam Oates trys to pick up the rebounds.
  9. By now we have all seen the commercials advertising that hockey is back, such as Sidney Crosby standing in your shower, Peter Forsberg in bed with your wife, Marty Turco stalking your daughter after school, and surfing with Jonathan Cheechoo. The one that you probably missed was Ryan Smyth pickingout the trash. Actually this is a user submitted commercial, and it may be one of the funniest on the list.
  10. Finally the best commercial on my list, the one with all the stars, from the All Star game. Resembles tournaments of my past teams, without all the fighting.
