Fuck the iPhone! Part II
Posted October 24th, 2007 by Anthony Filed Under: UncategorizedIts been over a month since I released my last post on how I felt about the iPhone and what you can get in the near future that will accommodate the typical geek more.
Now though my opinions have changed slightly. You can call me a hypocrite if it makes you all feel better.
For the longest time I wanted a full screen iPod. I even went so far as to wait to get a new iPod for 3 years. I saw generation after generation of new iPods come and go, yet I yearned for a full screen iPod.
My wishes seemed to come true with the iPhone “the best iPod ever” as Steve Jobs likes to say. But frankly the fact of the matter was that its not “the best iPod ever.” Actually I sum it up as one of the most elegant and revolutionary phones ever. But to me it wasn’t an iPod, though it was a stepping stone to, in my opinion “the best iPod ever.”
We could all argue the points of our opinions and what we believe to be right or wrong. The fact of the matter is that at&t was suckered into a deal that not only made both companies tons of money, but at the same time crippled the advancement of the iPhone and maybe the iPod Touch over the next 5 years.
So I broke down and bought the iPod Touch. Though it wasn’t the fact of it being a full screen iPod that led me to that decision, but it was the technology that was borrowed from the iPhone. I fell in love with OS X a few years ago and having a version of that in the iPod Touch sealed the deal.
Essentially the iPhone and the Touch are neither phone nor iPod. What they really are in my terms is a “mac nano” with built in phones and iPods. Since my life and I assume most of yours revolves around the internet, the key fact is that this was the first mobile device with a real browser. This sealed the deal for me.
Many of you will wonder why I didn’t get the iPhone. It’s not for its lack of features compared to something like the N800 (or the new N810) I spoke about in my previous post. What it really comes down to is the network its on and my opinion of that compared to a more powerful network such as Sprint’s. And just because I sell Sprint phones doesn’t sway my opinion, because I know far too well of Sprint’s faults (even Verizon is a better choice). But in this case Apple lost sight of the technology (as innovative as it is) and instead followed its noses to the scent of the loads of money it made off this deal. In my next open letter series of 3, I will address the at&t, Apple and the effect they will have not only on the telecommunication field but on innovation as well.
For now though my favorite mobile device is not an iPhone, N800, Touch or Treo. It is however the combination of 2 of them. The Treo and the Touch make the best fit together. You get the best of both worlds with an extra plus. You get the elegance and innovation of the Touch with the clunky and faithful Treo, and Sprint’s powerful network. The slimness of the Touch beats the the iPhone & the N800 hands down when it is accompanied by a device such as the Treo. Now only if Apple added bluetooth and DUN to the Touch, then I would really be in heaven.
