Digg Redesigned
Posted August 28th, 2007 by Bryan Filed Under: UncategorizedYep… Digg has received yet another face lift. This time they messed with a bunch of things.
It looks like they made some of the fonts bigger and more visible. I guess this is a good thing from a usability standpoint -it draws attention to what may have been ignored before, but I don’t know the details of what Digg features people were using.
They moved the Friends Activity off the page and into a sub menu accessible from the top. Now I actually have to click to see what my friends are doing. Personally, I think this is stupid. One of the things I used to like doing was seeing right in front of my face what my friends have been doing. Now its just one more click of the mouse away. i think that one click will make a difference, personally.
Next they added some cutesy icons to some of their links. Again this is just a presentation update, nothing functional. I suppose it just brings the attention to these buttons with an attempt to get more people in the Digg community to take part.
I also noticed some changes on the comments pages. I guess they listened to all the whining that everyone was doing. now we can expand the whole comment thread at once, and they even gave us some global settings to help out too.
Now, the biggest change they made was in fact a functionality update. They now include videos on the front page. Big friggin’ deal. Quite honestly, I say let the video sites handle their own popular videos. They all allow voting and such, so they can do the same thing - and its likely that they will do it better anyway.
Pictures, on the other hand, are still being neglected by Digg. What is their problem? Still after everything, we have no picture section. Is it REALLY that difficult to implement. I know it is not. There must be a reason, right? RIGHT?! I just want to see pictures sometimes. I cant goto any picture sites to see the top 10 pictures, etc. I can goto Youtube or Google Video or Metacafe and see videos sorted by the top rated, most viewed, most commented on, etc.
So what is it about Digg that makes them hate pictures so much????
